hguipf The second I heard the tone of that sax, I knew I had to get this. It’s so aggressive and playful at the same time. I’m also a sucker for tight unison instrumental lines. Everything about this album is crisp and delightful. Also...did you hear the sousaphone? Took me a while to figure out what I was hearing, but yep...there it is. Fun record! Favorite track: Vedette.

The Execrable Bede I will not rest until i can hear this band perform live. The energy, verve & incredibly tight improvisational ensemble work of Oliba International reminds me of Occidentale de Fanfare--minus the cornemuses; more than a tinge of the Township, plus a greater emphasis on the spirit of free-jazz--and with an ear towards La France d'outre-mer, instead of ears turned inward to France's rural traditions. An album that instantly attracts and echoes in your mind's ear. A top 10 release of 2018. Favorite track: Vedette.

Avec sa sono équipée de vieux pavillons en alu pour tous haut-parleurs, Oliba International pose le décor, et nous transporte dans un ailleurs à la fois proche et lointain, ni tout à fait rural, ni tout à fait urbain : le quintet nous invite à un « bal-la-poussière » tropical et populaire.
Le groupe s'est approprié les codes de musiques afros qui accompagnent la vie quotidienne lors de célébrations, de mariages ou d'enterrements : sébène de la rumba congolaise, tsapiky de Madagascar, second line de la Nouvelle Orléans, benga du Kenya. Leur but ? La « chauffe », amener l'auditoire à la danse et à la transe, en le faisant revenir dans une poêlée de riffs de saxophone solaires et de guitare ultra-véloce, sur les charbons ardents d'un sousaphone affranchi et d'une indéfectible grosse caisse, au cœur des crépitements diaboliques d'une caisse claire hallucinée.
Fi des rôles attribués habituellement à chaque instrument : ici on est dans la polyphonie, tantôt écrite et tantôt improvisée ; chacun contribue à développer des thèmes simples, vivaces, attachants.

Why do you love this album? Well, it is the quality of ALL the Analog Africa releases , the astonishing presentation- artwork, AWESOME booklets, the mastering, the music first of all and the feeling you connect with it and the artists involved. Due to not earning enough I changed from vinyl to CDs, but I am glad for the high quality downloads of the vinyl only releases that you are able to burn to disc. Together with a chosen few others AA is a greater than great label. Period. Markus Bader
